CAIRO: Actor Hussein Fahmy stressed the importance of broadening the limits of imagination during his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 12th International Student Leadership Conference (ISLC) at the American University in Cairo (AUC).
“Imagination is an essential factor in becoming a leader, as imagination becomes reality and reality forms our environment, Fahmy told the more than 800 students gathered in AUC’s Ewart Hall.
Fahmy advised the students to think freely and express themselves in whatever way they wished, whether through music, literature or art and stressed that a leader’s most important trait was honesty.
The ISLC, an annual conference in which youth from different universities around the world meet to discuss current problems and how they can play a role in solving them, featured workshops, lectures and seminars designed to strengthen participants’ leadership skills.
According to Dina Bedair, ISLC’s president, the theme of this year’s conference “Break Free . Egypt: Let the Transformation Begin, was inspired by the common feelings of stagnation and monotony experienced by youth in Cairo.
“ISLC 2007 urges every individual to play an active role in his/her society in order to make changes for the better, she said.
