CAIRO: The Prosecutor General’s office on Monday postponed till May 24 the investigation of director of the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary, Nasser Amin upon the request of his defense committee.

A police report was filed against Amin by chairman of the Judges’ Club, Yehia Ragheb Dakroury, accusing him of slander and defamation in press releases where he criticized the State Council’s refusal to appoint women in judicial positions at the State Council.

Director of the legal support unit in the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), Rawda Ahmed, told Daily News Egypt, "We requested the investigation be postponed so we could review the case papers and the police report."

Amin considered the police report filed against him "a kind of pressure".

He told Daily News Egypt, "The aim of this police report is to pressure organizations and individuals who support women’s rights to judicial posts and to silence their voices."

He added: "The center I represent has been defending the independence of the judiciary for years. But we also defend women’s rights to be designated judicial posts, which is a right guaranteed by the Egyptian constitution and international conventions."

Seven rights organizations, including the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information, the Hisham Mubarak Law Center and the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights provided legal representation for Amin.

The seven rights organizations said "they were worried" about the police report and called for "resolving the case through dialogue instead of resorting to the courts, considering it is a matter of difference of opinion."
