CAIRO: Pope Shenouda expressed his support to the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak’s regime and forced him to step down after 30 years in power.

The Pope said in the first meeting of the Holy Synod after the Jan. 25 revolution that he hopes Egypt will become a democratic, civil country.

The Holy Synod issued a statement after the meeting stating that the church hopes Egypt will be a democratic country that chooses its parliament members based on free and fair elections, and represented by all sectors of the society.

The statement also stressed the need to fight poverty, corruption and unemployment, as well as resist chaos and vandalism and ensure safety, social justice and national unity.

“We salute Egypt’s youth who led Egypt to a white revolution, with the blood of Egypt’s martyrs who were honored by Egypt’s people and army and we give condolence to the families of the martyrs,” the statement read.

The Holy Synod also welcomed the Supreme Council of Armed Forces’ decision to dissolve parliament, and its call for safety.

“The church also salutes Egypt’s brave army and the Supreme Council of Armed Forces for the communiqués issued to protect Egypt internally and externally.”
