The Supreme Judiciary Council (SJC) agreed on Monday to assign judges and prosecutors to polling stations to supervise the constitutional referendum scheduled for 15 December.

President Mohamed Morsy’s constitutional declaration, which ring-fenced his decisions from the influence of the judiciary, sparked controversy among Egypt’s judges, many of whom condemned what they saw as an attack on the judiciary.

The Judges’ Club announced its refusal to supervise the referendum on Sunday evening in response to Morsy’s declaration, calling the upcoming referendum “null and void.”

The High Committee for Elections, headed by Judge Samir Abu Al-Maaty, met on Sunday night to begin preparing for the referendum. The committee began discussing logistics surrounding the constitutional referendum.
