Supreme Electoral Committee defends referendum process

Electoral committee denies violations and roumours that that the secretary general had resigned

A spokesperson for the Supreme Electoral Committee (SEC) denied some of the voting violations which have been reported and further denied reports that the secretary general of the committee had resigned.

Judge Mahmoud Abu Shousha, a member of the SEC said it was impossible for people who are not judges to have overseen the first stage of the referendum on Saturday. He also denied that military judges supervised the referendum and accusations that people on the electoral register voted more than once.

The National Salvation Front, the largest opposition bloc, NGOs and the National Council for Human Rights  claimed thousands of voting violations took place during the first stage of the referendum.

Abu Shousha also denied reports that Secretary General of the committee Zaghloul Al-Belshy had resigned.

Conflicting reports emerged on Tuesday surrounding claims that the head of the Supreme Electoral Committee (SEC) had resigned.

State-run Al-Ahram reported that a source close to Al-Belshy said he had resigned due to the lack judicial supervision for the upcoming second stage of the referendum on the proposed constitution.

According to Al-Ahram, the source said that Al-Belshy apologised for not continuing in his role.

State-owned news agency MENA reported that Al-Belshy had a medical condition and is in hospital receiving treatment.
