New libel charges against controversial Salafi preacher

Former presidential advisor Amr El-Leithy accuses Abdallah Badr of libel

Resigned presidential advisor Amr El-Leithy raised a lawsuit against controversial Salafi preacher Abdallah Badr, accusing him of insulting him and his father, Mamdouh El-Leithy.

Badr criticised the way presidential advisors were appointed in a video broadcast on YouTube. He claimed that President Mohamed Morsy appointed some advisors to please opposition groups.

Badr denounced El-Leithy’s appointment as a presidential advisor, calling him a “procurer and son of a procurer”. Badr also criticised Morsy’s decision to appoint Sekina Fouad, Egyptian female journalist and politician, as a presidential advisor.

The controversial Salafi preacher claimed that Morsy should appoint state officials that are loyal to him, regardless of the reactions of citizens. “They are afraid they might be accused of Ikhwanising the state. Well, they would be accused of that even if they appoint Coptic state officials.”

El-Leithy filed a complaint to Al-Darb Al-Ahmar prosecution office, accusing Badr of libel against him and his father, who is the president of the Federation of Artistic Unions.

El-Leithy was appointed as one of Morsy’s advisors before he resigned following the presidential palace clashes.

Badr received a one-year imprisonment sentence on 17 December for defaming Actress Elham Shahin on his TV show on Al-Hafez Salafi TV channel.
