A Year in Review: Strikes and civil disobedience

2011 was a busy year, with over 1,300 labour protests held. The frustrated workers continued to take to the streets in 2012.


  • There have been over 100 incidents of industrial action in January, 2012. That includes protests, sit-ins and strikes, held mainly by farmers and labourers.
  • The count for February was 92. This month also witnessed an attempt at civil disobedience.
  • In March, there were around 70 protests, strikes or sit-ins.
  • A reported number of 270 protests in April.  This includes political protests, industrial action and student protests.
  • There was a total number of protests held in May was 206.
  • In June  157 protests were reported.
  • In July, numbers exceeded 500 with 566 protests.
  • In August the number dropped to 410.
  • The number of protests rose again in September, with the start of the new academic year, to 615.
  • There were a total of 507 protests in October.
  • November witnessed over 300 protests.
  • There have been at least seven protests in December in addition to another attempt at civil disobedience.
