Zeinhom Court ratified the release of Mohamed Fahmy on Wednesday, despite an appeal filed by the prosecution.

Fahmy is a political activist who was arrested on Saturday at dawn in the vicinity of Abdin police station. He was accused of possessing a homemade firearm; an accusation which he denied.

Fahmy was granted bail of EGP 5,000 following an appeal of the initial order of EGP 10,000.

Fahmy was released pending trial, and a court trial is expected imminently. Amr Imam, Fahmy’s lawyer, said: “He will get acquitted during the very first session”. Imam went on to call into question the legality of the charges brought against Fahmy.

A rally of people gathered outside Zeinhom Court before the session in solidarity with Fahmy.

Fahmy, a member of No Military Trials Movement and the Front for Defending Egypt’s Protesters, was briefly detained then acquitted in April, 2012.
