Around 300 members of the 6 April Youth Movement gathered in a protest outside the courthouse in Minya on Tuesday afternoon, according to one of the movement’s members who asked to remain anonymous. The event was not officially planned in advance.

The group demanded justice for the death of one of their members, 17-year-old Gaber “Jika” Salah, who was shot in the back during clashes between protestors and police on Mohamed Mahmoud Street last November. They also demanded that the prosecutor general resign and that the entire Ministry of Justice be “cleansed”, the source said.

The protest lasted about one hour and remained peaceful, though toward the end, several members began to spray paint the outside of the courthouse red, the source said. Police were present but did not intervene.

Officials can continue to expect marches, demonstrations and protests from the 6 April Movement in the days and weeks to come until their demands for justice are met, the source said.
