Protesters surrounded Misr Al-Gedida court, on Saturday morning, in support of those arrested during Friday clashes.
Human Rights Lawyer Ragia Omran confirmed that 15 individuals were arrested following Friday’s clashes by the Presidential Palace. She also confirmed that the individuals appeared in front of prosecutors in Heliopolis for interrogation.
Lawyer Ahmed Algadamy, who is attending on behalf of three arrested individuals, told Daily News Egypt, that some of the 15 individuals are members of the Revolutionary Ultras.
Algadamy confirmed: “The 15 arrested individuals include a 17-year-old girl, and a 54-year-old woman.” He also said that the older woman, Iman Ahmed, is a member of the Free Front for Peaceful Change.
“A mentally challenged man has been mistakenly arrested among the 15 individuals,” added Lawyer Algadamy, “and is supposed to be released.”
At time of print, the 15 detainees were given 15 days on remand.
Violent clashes erupted near the Presidential Palace on Friday evening between dozens of protesters and security forces. The protesters were dispersed using teargas bombs. It is still unclear what initially triggered the violence.
