El-Sayed El-Badawi, the head of the Al-Wafd Party, was prevented from travelling on Saturday due to “charges of attempting to ‘overthrow the regime’” that were placed on him by President Mohamed Morsi before his ouster.

El-Badawi had intended to travel to Sudan on Saturday night but the authorities at Cairo International Airport prevented him from leaving, according to the party. A media officer at the airport also confirmed the incident.

“He will travel today,” said Sameh Akl, rapporteur of the Media Committee for Al-Wafd Party. “This decision was taken under the regime of former President Morsi,” he added.

Akl said El-Badawi’s name was on the list because the former prosecutor general, appointed by Morsi, had charged him with attempting to “overthrow the regime”, adding that his name was placed on the list on 28 June and the list was sent to the airport on 1 July.

Akl said on Saturday evening that Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat would remove El-Badawi’s name from the list.

Morsi was ousted by military intervention following mass rallies on 30 June.

A travel ban was also placed on the owner of CBC television station Mohammed Al-Amin on 28 June, following allegations of tax evasion that Morsi had publically accused him of in a televised speech.
