State of emergency extended for two months

Presidential order issued, extension to commence from 12 September

Interim president Adly Mansour issued presidential order number 532, Thursday, stating that the state of  emergency is to be extended for two months starting 4pm Thursday.

The statement was read by presidential spokesman Ihab Badawi, who clarified that the decision was made after reviewing the current security situation in Egypt, with the Egyptian cabinet having approved the president’s decision.

The emergency law was legislated in the 1958 during the era of former president Gamal Abdel Nasser, before being suspended for 18 months by former president Anwar Al Sadat and later reinstated by former president Hosni Mubarak. The abolition of the law was one of the primary demands of the 25 January Revolution.

No official statement was released concerning extension of curfew hours.
