The Social Popular Alliance Party announced that it will start an awareness campaign to inform “the masses about the articles that the constitution must include” under the name “Dostourna” (Our Constitution), in a statement released on Wednesday.

The statement added that the campaign will issue “awareness papers” to better inform Egyptians of the articles in question, which are primarily concerned with citizenship, the democratic process, the separation of authorities, general freedoms, and economic and social rights.

The party added that it will invite parties and political movements to join the campaign.

Talaat Fahmy, secretary general for the party, said: “We aim at instigating a societal dialogue about the constitution, not only among the elite; this will create a constitution truly voicing the opinions of the Egyptian people.”

Fahmy said that the campaign will start dialogues such social powerbrokers as syndicates and political powers in the Leftist Parties’ Alliance among others, all of which will be invited to participate in the campaign.

The results of these dialogues, Fahmy added, will result in suggestions presented by the party to the Constituent Assembly, through leftist assembly member Hussein Abdel Razek, head of Al-Tagamo’ party.

The Socialist Popular Alliance Party was founded in March 2011, following the 25 January Revolution, and is headed by prominent leftist leader Abdel Ghaffar Shokr. The party gained seven seats in the 2011 parliamentary elections, as a component party of “The Revolution Continues” Alliance.
