The Giza Criminal Court ordered the release of Former Minister of Tourism Zoheir Garranah on an EGP 100,000 bail pending a retrial. He was charged with the embezzlement of public money.

The court was adjourned until 20 January, according to state owned Middle East News Association (MENA).

The retrial was ordered by the Court of Cassation after the Giza Criminal Court had originally sentenced Garranah and the fugitive businessmen, Hisham Al-Hathek and Hussein Segwany, to five years in a maximum security prison and a fine of EGP 293m.

The court sentenced Garranah and the businessmen on the grounds that the prosecutor general had proven to the court that Garranah had sold vast areas of land in Hurghada, including petroleum sites to the aforementioned businessmen for $1 per metre, disregarding legal procedures.
