12 bombs defused at Ain Shams University

University security found the IEDs, called bomb experts on campus to disable

Ain Shams University security found 12 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on campus Tuesday, the Ministry of Interior reported.

Police forces and bomb experts disabled the IEDs, which were found between the Faculties of Law and Computer Science, according to a ministry statement.

The discovery comes after three bombs exploded on 2 April in outside Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering, killing Tarek El-Mergawy, director of Western Giza Investigation, and injuring five police officers.

The IEDs at Cairo University were “planted inside a tree in the area”, across the street from the main gate, the Ministry of Interior said in a press statement.

Militant attacks in Cairo have increased since the ousting of former president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July.

On 24 January, four bombs went off at four separate places in Greater Cairo, including the Cairo Security Directorate in Bab Al-Khalq neighbourhood. The Sinai-based militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis claimed the attacks, which killed six people.
