Minister of Defence Sedki Sobhi met with his Greek counterpart, Minister of Defence and Military Production Dimitris Avramopoulos on Monday.

The two ministers discussed ways to “strengthen cooperation and military relations between the armed forces of both countries” and “tackled the latest developments in the region and changes in the regional and international arenas,” according to a statement issued by the Egyptian armed forces.

The meeting was also attended by Egyptian Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Mahmoud Hegazy, the Greek Ambassador to Egypt and senior military leaders.

Avramopoulos and other high level Greek officials also met Egyptian interim President Adly Mansour on Monday at the presidential palace. Mansour stressed the historic relations between the two countries and praised the ongoing progress of the strengthening of economic, political and military relations between Egypt and Greece, according to state-owned Al-Ahram.

Mansour visited Athens in January for one day with Minister of Tourism Hisham Zaazou and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Fahmy. During his visit, he spoke with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his counterpart President Karolos Papoulias.

During the press conference in January, Mansour praised the Greek government’s “understanding” of Egypt’s transition following former president Mohamed Morsi’s ouster.

On 1 January, Greece started its fifth term in the European Union presidency, having previously held the position in 1983, 1988, 1994 and 2003. The presidency rotates among the member states of the EU every six months.
