Rafah rocket likely stray from Gaza: Security official

Officials say rocket that wounded soldier was meant for Israel

A rocket that landed in the Egyptian town of Rafah and wounded one soldier was fired from Gaza and intended for Israel, a security official told state-run Al-Ahram on Saturday.

According to the official, the rocket “was probably fired from the Gaza Strip and landed by mistake in Egyptian territory”.

The condition of the wounded soldier remains unclear.

Over 1,000 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israeli territory since the beginning of Israel’s Operation Protective Edge, aimed at crippling Hamas’ ability to launch attacks into Israel.

However, subsequent Israeli airstrikes have killed over 300 people and wounded thousands more. At least 74% of the victims are civilians and many are children, according to the United Nation’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
