Court releases 26 Ultras White Knights detainees

Football fans found innocent after being charged with breaking Protest Law

The Cairo Misdemeanour Court found 26 members of the Ultras White Knights (UWK) -the Zamalek FC fan group – innocent after they were arrested and accused of breaking the controversial Protest Law, according to the UWK.

The defendants, who were arrested from a protest in Shubra on 30 August, were also charged with rioting, breaking and damaging public property, carrying weapons, and attacking citizens.

On 30 August, the UWK group held a protest in Shubra demanding the release of detained colleagues. During the protest, police forces arrest 30 more members, in addition to the 8 that had been previously detained.
Disputes between the Ultras White Knights and the Zamalek Sporting Club President Mortada Mansour have been commonplace.

Police arrested eight members of the fan group days after Mansour reported an alleged assassination attempt against outside of the sporting club on 17 August. The UWK have questioned the validity of Mansour’s claims and say he is “fighting the group.”
