Israel reopened the Erez and Kerem Shalom border crossings with the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, according to the Israeli Coordination and Liaison Administration to the Gaza Strip office.

The two borders had been closed on Sunday in response to rocket fire from Gaza into the Eshkel region, in southern Israel.

It was the first time the Gaza-Israel border crossings were closed since the ceasefire agreement between the two sides, following a conflict that lasted for over a month in August.

Operation Protective Edge, as the Israel Defense Forces dubbed the intervention, resulted in the deaths of 2,104 Palestinians. The Israeli death toll was 69, including four civilians, according to a United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The operation was conducted by land, air and, sea forces and destroyed an estimated 18,000 homes, as well as hospitals, mosques, and schools.

Egypt brokered the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas that took effect on 26 August.
