Egypt condemns deadly mosque bombing in Nigeria

At least 120 dead and 270 injured in double suicide bomb attack on Kano's Grand Mosque

By Sharif Paget

Egypt’s foreign ministry condemned a militant attack in northern Nigeria, according to the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up in front of Kano’s Grand Mosque during Friday prayers, with gunmen opening fire afterwards leaving at least 120 dead and another 270 injured, according to state-owned Al-Ahram.

“Terrorism is a global phenomenon targeting security, stability, and development in all parts of the world,” stressed the spokesman in a statement published on the ministry’s official Facebook page. The spokesman added that “terrorist acts” deserve “concerted regional and international efforts to eliminate them”.

The Egyptian cabinet approved a draft law detailing the offences necessary for a group or organisation to be labelled a “terrorist entity” on Wednesday.

Egypt has been facing an insurgency in North Sinai and frequent bombings and attacks on police and military forces across the country since the ousting of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
