Police disperse Friday marches, arrest protesters

The Anti-Coup Alliance calls for pre-25 January protests under the slogan 'together for liberation’

Security forces dispersed at least three marches in Ain Shams, Helwan, and other Cairo neighbourhoods on Friday, state-owned Al-Ahram reported.

The Anti-Coup Alliance, which is composed several Islamist parties, including the Muslim Brotherhood, called for a wave of protests under the slogan, “together for liberation,” in preparation for the upcoming fourth anniversary of the 25 January Revolution.

Police arrested three protesters in Helwan and four in 6th of October City on Friday, Al-Ahram said. The four arrested from 6th of October were accused of fraud as police stated they created fake videos of police torture.

The state-owned newspaper also reported three demonstrations in Egypt’s Sharqeya governorate in protest of the recent death sentences handed out to Brotherhood detainees.

The Brotherhood previously called the death sentences “crimes against humanity”.

Since the military ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, weekly marches, which often result in clashes between security forces and protesters, have been a common occurrence.
