A woman in Assiut died on Sunday night after being infected by the bird flu virus, the fifth case of its kind in 2015, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported. The last recorded death from bird flu was two days ago, also from Assiut.

Assiut’s Deputy Health Minister Ahmed Abdel Hamid told state-run news agency MENA that the Assiut Lung hospital  received a new bird flu case involving a woman.

The patient, who was in her 50s and from the neighbourhood of Deiroot, was transferred for treatment in Cairo to receive the necessary health examinations. The tests proved that she suffered severe respiratory system dysfunction.

The new death is the fifth case during 2015 alone, with another four out of seven infected cases resulting in death. Two of the remaining infected patients are currently held in Assiut Lung Hospital’s intensive care unit.

According to health ministry media official Hamdy Abdel Wahed Monday morning, he commented: “We still did not receive any new death cases for today.”

Approximately, 180 people in Egypt have contracted Bird Flu since 2006, of which 66 died, according to the Ministry of Health.

The ministry added that it has informed the Veterinary Medicine Authority to take the necessary precautions to combat the epidemic in potentially infectious areas.
