Endowments ministry stands in solidarity with armed forces

Demonstration to be a civilised model for opinion expression, says minister

By Marina Makary

The Ministry of Religious Endowments organised a demonstration Tuesday, in front of Abbasiya’s Al-Noor Mosque, in solidarity with the armed forces and the police, state media reported.

The ministry added that the demonstration is to emphasise its rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism. Approximately 4,000 ministry imams, scholars, and preachers participated to support the army’s “fight against terrorism”.

Minister of Religious Endowments Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa highlighted that the demonstration will be a “civilised model” for expressing opinions, “without any disruption to traffic”. He pointed out that the stand will declare the ministry’s intention on the “renewal of religious discourse”.

The stand is a “national reaction” to the ministry’s grief over those deceased in the latest 29 January attack in Sinai, according to a ministry official.

The stand comes after the ministry received an official permit from the Ministry of Interior.

The Ministry of Religious Endowments had previously released a statement calling on the government to revoke the citizenship of Egyptians living abroad who are “inciting violence”. They added in the statement that this was because they are “traitors and agents who represent a threat to the homeland”.
