Egypt expects any newly formed Israeli government to engage directly in a political process that leads to the resumption of negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli authorities, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wednesday.

The ministry added in a statement that any Israeli government should act according to the internationally agreed on peace process and to the Arab peace initiative. This is in order to end the occupation and conflict on the basis of two-state solution to ensure the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Provisional election results in Israel show that current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party won the majority government, with 30 of the 120 seats in the Israeli Parliament.

US Secretary of State John Kerry had said during a Saturday press conference at the Economic Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh that President Obama remains committed to peace solutions to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict with any elected Israeli government.
