2 security personnel injured in Helwan bomb explosion

Bombs also went off in Zagazig and Sinai

A bomb exploded in front of the Helwan district building Monday morning, reportedly leaving two security guards injured.

The device was installed by as yet unidentified assailants in front of the building, which caused severe injuries to the security personnel.

The incident took place only a few hours after two other homemade explosive devices detonated in front of two churches in Zagazig in Sharqeya governorate Sunday night. The explosions caused damage to several cars, but no casualties were reported.

A third bomb at the same location was dismantled by bomb squads before it detonated, state-owned news agency MENA reported.

The Sunday night explosion occurred during church masses celebrating the Eastern Orthodox Easter. The Coptic community in Egypt has been encountering frequent similar attacks in the vicinity of churches since the attack on the Al-Qeddesin church in Alexandria which left 23 dead and several others injured, only a few weeks before the 25 January Revolution.

Bombings, for which several militant groups in Egypt have claimed responsibility, have become a frequent occurrence across Egypt. The insurgency is at its peak in North Sinai, followed by Greater Cairo and other governorates.

A car bomb exploded Sunday morning at a military checkpoint in the North Sinai town of Al-Arish killing at least five policemen. The attack was claimed by “State of Sinai”. The militant group also claimed responsibility for the killings of two people on Saturday, including conscript Ahmed Fathy Aboul Fotouh and another individual, in footage that was released Friday via their official Twitter account.
