2 police officers, 3 conscripts injured in Beni Suef shooting

An exchange of fire between security forces and wanted assailants led to the injuries, according to news reports


Two police officers and three conscripts were injured during an exchange of fire with wanted assailants, several news reports said.

The injured were transferred to hospital to receive medical attention. The Ministry of Interior has neither confirmed nor denied the incident.

Security personnel have been a targeted by militant groups since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Last Friday, four people died and one was injured, all allegedly Muslim Brotherhood members, following an explosion in Beni Suef, an interior ministry statement said.

The ministry’s statement added that another person was killed after a bomb exploded in Helmeyat Al-Zaitoun after sustaining injuries. The deceased was allegedly a Muslim brotherhood member who was found to be involved in several operations against security forces.

The interior ministry attributes explosions and drive-by shootings to the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and the group’s supporters. The Brotherhood has always refuted these accusations.

Two bombs exploded and another was dismantled Monday morning in Beheira governorate resulting in six injuries. The bombs targeted electricity pylons.

In a separate incident, unidentified assailants placed bombs to target electricity pylons in Upper Egypt. The damages endured cost EGP 200,000, according to state-run newspaper Al-Ahram.
