Egyptian worker killed in Benghazi shelling

Foreign Ministry has evacuated almost 13,000 from Libya since February

An Egyptian worker was killed during shelling Saturday in the Libyan city of Benghazi, which witnessed fighting between Islamist militias and forces of the internationally-recognised government.

The 30-year-old Beheira governorate native, Abdel Wakeel Fadl, was injured in the bombing before he died in a Benghazi hospital, state media reported.

The deteriorating security situation in Libya has driven some of the approximately 1 million Egyptians living and working in Libya out of the country.

Egypt has been evacuating its nationals residing in Libya since the beheading of 20 Coptic Egyptians in Sirte in February, which was claimed by “Islamic State” (IS) affiliates.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced Friday the evacuation of 194 Egyptian nationals detained in a cantonment facility for illegal immigrants in Misrata. This has raised the total of evacuated Egyptians to almost 12,924 since February.
