Egyptian authorities have been battling to put down a militant insurgency in North Sinai for years. The violence spiked following former president Mohamed Morsi’s ouster in July 2013, following mass protests against his turbulent one-year rule.

The National Council for Arab and Egyptian Tribes (NCAET), an alliance of tribes in the Sinai Peninsula, recently declared its cooperation with the state in its fight against terror.  A total of 177 tribes agreed to cooperate in the state’s war on terror, state-run news agency MENA said.

Most of the violence in the region has been claimed by Islamist militant group “State of Sinai”, formerly known as “Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis”.

Just hours before the assassination of Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat in Cairo, “State of Sinai” released a video Monday showing its killing of three Egyptian judges in May. The group has not claimed responsibility for Barakat’s assassination.
