Citizen files lawsuit against Interior Ministry

A verdict will be issued on 14 December

A citizen filed a lawsuit against the Ministry of Interior, demanding compensation for the physical damages he sustained at the hands of a policeman in Beheira who allegedly tortured him in sensitive parts of his body.

The Administrative Court decided that a verdict will be issued on the case on 14 December and requested the citizen to present medical documentation to prove the mistreatment.

The ministry filed a lawsuit against the accused policeman, demanding that he pays compensation if he is proven guilty.

“For the first time, the ministry is making a wise decision to confront violations by policemen,” defence lawyer and member of the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) Malek Adly told Daily News Egypt.

He said this step indicates that the ministry is “attempting to deal with police brutality differently by taking action instead of releasing statements disclaiming responsibility”.

Regarding compensation, Adly said it does not matter who pays the compensation to the citizen and it is more important that they compensate him immediately.
