Explosion in Sharqeya train station

No casualties reported as train returns to service within hours

An improvised explosive device was detonated early Saturday on the eastern bound Cairo-Zagazig railway track in the Sharqeya governorate.

The resulting damage to the track stopped train movement between Cairo and Zagzig for four hours while the railway was repaired.

The ministry of interior said the explosion was minor and left no casualties.

It added that explosives experts were sent to the sweep the area for other devices, while security forces are investigating the attack.

The incident comes one day after the Sharqeya governor was dismissed from his position by the cabinet on Friday.

Explosions have been a frequent occurrence in Egypt since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. The explosions have primarily targeted security personnel and their facilities.

North Sinai has witnessed the highest frequency of these attacks. Since June, there have been two attacks by militants on the houses of police officers.

The governorates of Fayoum, Gharbeya, Aswan, Mahalla and Sharqeya have been subject to attacks on electricity pylons, drive-by shootings and bomb explosions.

Several militant groups are currently operating in Egypt, notably Ajnad Misr and State of Sinai.
