Saudi-led coalition announced end of ceasefire in Yemen

The ceasefire was agreed upon during UN-backed talks between the two warring parties in Geneva

The Saudi-led coalition announced the end of the ceasefire that began on 15 December, which is considered a setback to peace efforts.

The ceasefire was agreed upon during UN backed talks between the two warring parties in Geneva.

The official Saudi news agency reported Saturday that “the coalition announced the end of the ceasefire as by Saturday 11:00 GMT”.

The statement cited the Houthi militia and former president Ali Abdullah Saleh’s troops’ continued bombardment of Saudi border cities and the prevention of humanitarian aid from reaching the Yemeni people as the reasons behind ending the ceasefire.

Both sides failed to reach an agreement in Geneva, but the talks will resume on 14 January.
