Ethiopia will not add further sluices to GERD

The tripartite meeting ended with the Ethiopian side’s refusal of Egypt’s proposal to increase the sluices

The investigation into the addition of two further water sluices to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam was one of the terms to emerge from the signing of the Khartoum Document on 29 December by the Foreign and Water Resources Ministers of Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt.

Ethiopia did not agree to the request, but the six ministers agreed to form a tripartite technical committee to consider the amendment to the dam’s infrastructure.

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity Motoma Makasa said in press statements Friday that Ethiopia claimed that the two originally planned sluices were sufficient to ensure continued downstream water flow, and that it had conducted extensive technical studies.

Ethiopia invited ministers, journalists, and parliamentarians in Egypt and Sudan to visit the construction of the dam site.

Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hossam El-Moghazy said in press statements Friday that he has received a comprehensive report about the discussion held during the meeting, and it will be presented in the next six-party meeting that is to be held in February and will include the ministers of the three countries Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia.
