Cambridge PhD student GuilioRegeni had been missing since 25 January

The Italian Foreign Ministry summoned Thursday the Egyptian ambassador in Rome to express “dismay” over the death of Italian PhD student Giulio Regeni in Cairo.

The Italian officials requested “full disclosure regarding this case”, calling on the Egyptian authorities to immediately launch a joint investigation with the involvement of Italian experts, according to a statement from the Italian ministry.

Giulio Regeni was found dead on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road highway late on Wednesday,a significant distance from where he was last seen in Behouth metro station in Dokki. His body bore marks of severe beating and possible torture, according to a security source.

The source told Daily News Egypt that it could not be revealed whether Regeni’s death was caused by criminals or other individuals.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry summoned the Italian ambassador in Cairo to express condolences for the death of the Italian student and to affirm the commitment of the Egyptian government to “full cooperation and coordination” with the Italian side to uncover the reasons behind the student’s death.

Regeni, who had just turned 28, was a PhD student at the University of Cambridge in the UK, and came to Cairo as a visiting scholar at the American University in Cairo (AUC). He has reportedly been missing since the fifth anniversary of 25 January uprising, while he was on his way to Downtown via Behouth metro station.
