Man dies in hospital after sustaining injuries in police raid

Kamal Al-Sharkawy was injured Tuesday when security forces attempted to arrest him

Kamal Al-Sharkawy, 52, a construction worker from Nahia, died Sunday night after sustaining injures when police forces attempted to arrest him last Tuesday, according to his family.

He was injured by falling off the roof of his house during a police raid Tuesday. However his family suspects that the officers conducting the raid “threw him off the roof” and then sent him to the Boulaq Al-Dakrour hospital to avoid suspicion. The family concluded their statement saying he died in the hospital while receiving medical care.

The official narrative by police said that Al-Sharkawy is a “wanted member of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood”, who escaped during a police raid. The police report said that he died after sustaining an injury in an accident during his work as a construction worker “by falling off a building”.

A video has circulated online showing Al-Sharkawy lying semi-conscious in a hospital bed after being investigated by an unknown man. He can be heard answering questions. It was reported that the video was shot in the hospital, just minutes before he was declared dead.

In the video, Al-Sharkawy with his  arm in a cast had said that he heard commotion as the police stormed his private residence and that a police officer called Mostafa threw him off the roof of his one-story house.

A security source has denied this claim.
