Security forces arrested ‘fugitive terrorist affiliated to Muslim Brotherhood’

Abdel Razek received death sentence in absentia

A security official declared Tuesday the criminal apparatus in Giza directorate arrested a fugitive terrorist, Mohamed Abdel Razek, affiliated to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group, according to the Ministry of Interior’s statement.

The statement noted the defendant was found hiding from security forces in a rented apartment in the Giza governorate.

Abel Razek previously received a death sentence in absentia from Giza police station on charges of being involved in “Al-Astqama Mosque clashes”, the first violent incident that took place following Rabaa Al-Adaweya dispersal in August 2013.

Security forces confiscated four mobile phones, a CPU, and a computer found with Abel Razek. The arrests were part of a continued crackdown by Egyptian authorities on the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. The group was designated a terrorist organisation by the government in 2015 and a tough security crackdown has put thousands of its members behind bars.

In August 2013, following the ouster of former Islamist president Morsi, interim authorities moved to clear two large pro-Muslim Brotherhood sit-ins in Cairo. The dispersal resulted in hundreds of deaths, the majority of which were Morsi supporters, but some security forces were also killed.
