German security experts complete inspection of Hurghada airport

The delegation also reviewed security in Sharm El-Sheikh and Marsa Alam airports

The delegation of German security experts has completed its inspection of the security measures in Hurghada airport after a two-day review.

The experts inspected the airport, starting with the entrance to the airport and extending to the planes. Security in the Sharm El-Sheikh and Marsa Alam airports was also reviewed.

Egyptian minister of aviation Hossam Kamal affirmed earlier this month that Egypt implements the highest standards of safety, and welcomes any cooperation to improve security in Egyptian airports, in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations.

International concerns were sparked over Egyptian airports security last October, when a Russian A321 plane was downed in Sinai, killing all 224 passengers and crew members on board. “Islamic State” claimed responsibility for the incident, purporting that they had planted an explosive device on the plane.

Egypt initially declared there was no evidence that the plane was brought down due to a “terrorist act”. However, Moscow said terrorists were responsible for the deaths, after its investigation committee found explosive material in the wreckage.

Russia issued an immediate suspension of all commercial flights to and from Egypt, pending a report on the security procedures at Egyptian airports. The UK soon followed with a similar decision.
