Barça exits Champions League

Atlético Madrid defeated fellow La Liga team FC Barcelona in Champions League competition yesterday, expelling Barça from competition.

Barcelona won the first match between the two Spanish league powerhouse on 5 April, 2-1. Atlético Madrid’s Fernando Torres scored the first goal in the 25th second of the match.

Unfortunately, ten minutes after scoring the only goal for Atlético Madrid, Torres was sent off, a fact that helped Barça to surge in the rest of the match. Uruguayan player Luis Suárez pushed Barcelona ahead scoring goals in the 63rd and the 74th minute.

However, in the second meeting between the two clubs, Atlético Madrid won by a score of 2-0. Two goals were scored by the French Antoine Griezmann, in the 36th and 88th minute of the match.

The aggregate score over the two matches was 3-2 in favour of the Madrilenian club. Atlético Madrid qualified for the UEFA’s semifinals, while Barça exited the competition.

In another quarterfinals confrontation between German club Bayern München and Portuguese club Benfica, Bayern defeated the Portuguese club in the first leg of the match played in Germany on 5 April, 1-0. The match’s only goal was scored by Chile’s Arturo Vidal.

In the second leg match, played in Portugal, yesterday, 13 April 2016, the teams ended the match in a draw, 2-2. The aggregate score in the two matches was 3-2 in favor of the German club. Bayern München thus moves on to the semifinals while Benfica exits the competition.

Spanish club Real Madrid and English club Manchester City also qualified for the Champions League semifinals.

The semifinal matches will be schedule on 15 April.
