Investigation into death of 8 Mexican tourists still ongoing: Foreign Ministry

Independent investigative bodies are currently handling the issue, awaiting final result, says ministry spokesperson

The Egyptian government’s investigation into the death of eight Mexican tourists last September is still ongoing, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abou Zaid told Daily News Egypt.

Mexico is not satisfied with Egypt’s efforts in the investigation, the Mexican foreign ministry said in statement released on Thursday.

The statement, which was sent to the Egyptian Embassy in Mexico, accused Egypt of failure in both investigating the incident and providing compensation to the families of the dead tourists.

Independent investigation bodies are currently handling the issue and the ministry is awaiting the final result, Abou Zaid said.

A tour group of 12 Egyptian and Mexicans were killed when security forces mistook them for terrorists in the Western desert in 2015.

An internal investigation inside the Chamber of Travel Agencies blamed the travel agencies that organised their trip for not abiding by safety standards.

According to this investigation, three of the Mexican families accepted compensation paid by the travel agencies.

Some reports argued that the Federation of Egyptian Tourism Agencies has paid three of the Mexican tourists’ families $140,000 each in compensation.

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism has officially accused a company called Windows of Egypt of breaching laws and regulations in the Bahariya Oasis incident.
