Fire breaks out in old Cairo neighbourhood of Al-Khalifa

50 storage rooms caught fire Wednesday morning

A fire broke out Wednesday morning in Old Cairo near Al-Khalifa neighbourhood in Al-Tounsi market.

Around 50 small storage rooms owned or rented by traders to store goods and furniture were primarily what caught on fire.

According to the Ministry of Interior, 20 fire engines arrived at the scene and began extinguishing the flames.

Several people who suffered from smoke inhalation as a result of the fires received medical supervision at nearby hospitals while others received immediate treatment in ambulances at the location.

The prosecution is expected to begin investigating the matter.

The fire began in a hotel located in the local market of Attaba. The flames spread to other buildings nearby, causing further damage and injuries.

Security forces, under the supervision of Cairo Security director General Abdel Aal, remained at the location as fire fighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

An increasing number of fires have been reported across Egypt over the past two months.

In May, three people died as a result of their injuries and 91 sustained injuries during a fire in a local market in Cairo’s Attaba district.
