Court sentences professor to 2 years in prison

Zahran was accused of propagating false claims against the deans of various universities

The Cairo Criminal Court sentenced professor and politician Gamal Zahran for two years in prison and a fine of EGP 10,000.

Zahran, a political science professor at Port Said University, was charged with publishing a series of articles under the title of “Dark Academic Year” in 2014, claiming that there are some university deans who belong to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

In his articles, Zahran also criticised the prime minister and the minister of higher education for allowing the deans of universities in Beni Suef, Alexandria, Suez, and Aswan to remain in their position.

The case filed by Amin Mostafa, dean of Beni Suef University, against Zahran proved that the latter claims are not true, and that those university deans were not affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Zahran was one of the coordinators of the Social Justice Coalition in late 2014 that was formed ahead of the parliamentary elections and included 27 parties and movements. He said that the coalition is an open hub for all political figures who believe in the goals of the 25 January Revolution.
