Activist’s release upheld in ‘detainees of the land’ case

Five minors were referred to trial over protest charges

Activist Zizo Abdo’s release was upheld on Tuesday, according to his lawyer Mokhtar Mounir.

Granted a court release on Sunday, political activist Abdo remained in detention following the prosecution’s appeal on the court ruling.

Abdo’s release will continue to be conditional. According to his defence lawyer, Mokhtar Mounir, Abdo should present himself at a police station three days a week for four hours a day over a period of 45 days.

In the meantime, Mohamed Eissa, a lawyer at the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR), reported Monday that five minors were referred to juvenile court over protest charges.

The defendants, previously released on bail, will face trial on 22 September. They were detained along with other protesters on 25 April during demonstrations against the Egyptian-Saudi maritime border demarcation agreement, also known as the Red Sea islands case.
