Precautionary measures renewed for released ‘Street Children’ band members

Defendants not yet referred to trial, must present themselves at police station twice a week

The Cairo Criminal Court renewed the precautionary measures imposed on the released Street Children band for another 45 days, the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) reported Thursday.

“Band members are required to present themselves at the police station twice a week,” defence lawyer Ahmed Osman told Daily News Egypt Thursday.

He explained that although the case has not been referred to trial yet, the defendants are banned from travelling by default. They’re further obliged to attend renewal sessions.

Young members of the satirical group “Street Children” were released from detention on 11 September, after the South Cairo Court accepted their appeal on their detention.

The members were arrested in May on charges of attempting to topple the regime, publishing offensive videos and inciting people against the authorities. The band members used to release videos online commenting on ongoing political events.
