27 IFFCO Egypt workers acquitted from striking charges

The workers were arrested earlier in January after security forces dispersed their strike against low wages

Ataqa Misdemeanour Court in Suez governorate on Sunday acquitted 27 workers from IFFCO Egypt Company for oils and food industries from accusations of incitement to strike and to sabotage the facilities of the company.

The workers were arrested earlier in January after security forces dispersed their strike against low wages. After being imprisoned for 15 days pending investigations, they were referred to court for trial.

The workers were banned from entering the company and resuming their work. However, following the acquittal, their lawyer started working on procedures to return them back to work.

The workers faced arrest and were subject to investigations after the company lawyer filed a lawsuit with the Suez prosecution against them. The lawsuit stated that workers strikes hindered company production and requested their arrest.

Among the 27 workers, eight were members of a labour union.

Leading figures in labour unions arranged a conference in solidarity with workers, calling for their return to work, and the implementation of their demands.
