Press Syndicate elections adjourned to 17 March

The elections were postponed as Friday's general assembly was not eligible to vote since only 1,173 of 4,300 expected journalists were present, says state-run newspaper

The committee assigned to supervise the Press Syndicate’s elections decided on Friday to adjourn the midterm elections to 17 March after only 1,173 journalists attended the general assembly of the syndicate, state-run newspaper Al-Akhbar reported.

The Press Syndicate’s midterm elections have been adjourned as the expected number of journalist who are supposed to attend it stands at 4,300; however, only 1,173 were present, consequently the committee decided to postpone it, the newspaper added.

With nearly 10,000 members eligible to vote, the assembly is only considered legitimate with an attendance of over 50%; a target that had been difficult to achieve in past elections. Due to the shortage on Friday, a second assembly will be called on 17 March with a required attendence of 25% of the members.
