Three officers detained on charges of torturing man to death

The incident took place in Al-Haram police station

The Giza Prosecution ordered on Monday the detention of three police officers on accusations of torturing a man to death in Al-Haram police station, as well as forcefully detaining him.

They will be interrogated by the prosecution.

The victim, 26-year-old conscript Mahmoud Sayed, was arrested alongside his brother on charges of murdering and robbing their grandmother. They were arrested on 13 February. The family says that both brothers were beaten, though one was released.

His family accused police officers of torture, state-owned media Al-Ahram reported on Tuesday.

The prosecution requested the Forensic Medicine Authority’s autopsy report and the testimonies of the detainee’s family. Local media reported that the report included information indicating that the body of Sayed included marks of beatings.

Since the beginning of 2016, there has been a string of cases of police abuses directed against civilians. Cases of death in detention are handled in secrecy by security forces and the prosecution. The Ministry of Interior does not release public statements about such violations; and if it does, it denies them.
