Trademarks granted by Egyptian Trademarks Office reached 5,294 in 2016: CAPMAS

The number of applications by Egyptians to obtain trademarks reached 10,789 applications in 2016, compared to 12,058 applications in 2015—a decrease of 10.5 %.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued a press release on the occasion of the “world intellectual property day”, which is celebrated on 26th April every year. The celebration was adopted by the Word Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) member states in 2000 to promote public awareness of the role of intellectual property and to celebrate innovators’ contributions to the development of societies under the slogan “Digital Creativity: Culture is Renewed.”

CAPMAS stated that the total number of trademarks granted by the Egyptian Trademark Office reached 5,294in 2016, compared to 5,488 trademarks in 2015—a decrease of 3.5 %.

Furthermore,  450 patents were granted by the Egyptian Patent Office in 2016, including 73 for Egyptians (16.2%) and 377 patents for foreigners (83.8%), compared to 472 patents in 2015, which included 92 patents for Egyptians (19.5%) and 380 patents for foreigners (80.5%), registering a decrease of 4.7%.

CAPMAS added that 124 patents were granted according to the international classification in the field of chemistry and metals, accounting for 27.6 % of the total patents in 2016. Of the figure, 17.7% of the patents were granted for Egyptians and 82.3% for foreigners.

Human needs followed with 88 patents, accounting for 19.6% of all patents, including 25% for Egyptians and 75 % for foreigner. The field of transport came in third with 81 patents registered in 2016, accounting for 18 % of total approved patents, including 7.4% for Egyptians and 92.6% for foreigners.

United States nationals were ranked first in terms of the number of patents granted from Egyptian patent offices. The United States alone accounted for 105 patents (23.3% of all patents), followed by Egyptians, who were approved for 73 patents, accounting for 16.2% of all patents received in 2016 from Egypt.

In third came Japanese nationals with 43 patents and 9.6% of the total patents granted in 2016.
