News of Egypt’s ambassador to Germany embezzling is false: Foreign Affairs Ministry

Local media had earlier reported that the ambassador was accused of embezzling €250,000

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday in a statement that the news circulated in local media, which included accusations of embezzlement against Egyptian ambassador to Germany Badr Abdelatty, was false.

The ministry denied all the alleged accusations against Abdelatty, including embezzlement, bribery, and registration of the embassy’s vehicles under his name.

“The ministry has an interior inspection body, which oversees the adherence of the diplomatic code of conduct,” the statement read, assuring that such bodies are independent and work in coordination with the ministry.

Local media had reported on Thursday that Abdelatty’s house in Berlin was allegedly raided by Administrative Control Authority (ACA) personnel on charges of embezzling €250,000, and that he would be sent back to Egypt.

Such reports came after activists on Twitter had shared the same news.

For the past year the ACA has been tackling corruption cases across various entities in Egypt.

The ACA revealed a corruption case in 2016 that led to the ouster and imprisonment of former minister of agriculture Salah Helal on charges of corruption.

In 2016, 968 incidents of corruption in governmental institutions in Egypt were revealed, according to Partners for Transparency (PFT).
