Hasm militants killed in security operation: Interior Ministry

The deceased were accused of participating in several militant operations against security personnel

The Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday that two Hasm militants were killed in action in New Cairo.

The two deceased were charged with participating in an attack on a checkpoint in Nasr City, as well as other attempts of assassinating judges and police personnel.

The ministry said that security forces were on their way to arrest the militants, but an exchange of fire resulted in their death. They were said to have been leaders in the field operations of the Hasm group.

Egypt is currently battling several armed groups, concentrated mainly in the Sinai Peninsula, since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Last week, the Ministry of Interior said that it killed a militant belonging to the armed group in an exchange of fire that took place in Fayoum.

Hasm has claimed responsibility for several recent attacks in statements circulated online. The movement first appeared in early 2016. In August, the group said it was behind the failed assassination attempt of former Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa. In October of the same year, militants driving a black private vehicle opened fire on army leader Adel Ragaai, assassinating him in front of his residence in Al-Obour City.
