Prosecution investigates prisoners escape from police truck

Fugitives were defendants in Helwan Brigades case, two out of five were arrested

Prosecution authorities in Cairo launched investigations Sunday into the escape of five detained suspects from the police truck carrying them while on its way back to prison after they attended a court session, state-media reported.

The Middle East News Agency cited a security source that the suspects broke the lock of the door of the vehicle on a road near the district of Maadi.

Security forces reportedly arrested two while three are still being searched for, state-media added. They were defendants of the case publicly known as “Helwan Brigades” which was looked into by court on Sunday.

Cairo Criminal Court postponed on Sunday, the trial of 215 suspects in the case of “Helwan Brigades” to 23 October, to continue listening to witnesses.

The suspects are facing accusations of carrying out attacks against the security forces, demolishing public properties such as electric transformer, and engaging with a terror organisation. Also, they were accused of belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood organisation.

The Egyptian government has declared the Brotherhood as a terror organisation following the attack on Dakahlia security directorate in 2013.

Last week, five defendants escaped from Al-Waqf police station in Qena governorate, after demolishing the back window of the detention cell. Security forces succeeded in arresting four of them, the fourth defendant arrested on Sunday, state-media reports said.

Initially, the head of the police station and three officers were suspended from work but were returned to work by the minister of Interior after investigations.

Preliminary investigations as reported suggested that another officer from the police station helped them escape.
