High State Security prosecution authority ordered on Monday a 15-day detention pending investigations for two defendants against the backdrop of the publicly known rainbow flag case.

Sarah Hegazy and Ahmed Alaa are accused of “joining an illegal organisation which aims at obstructing constitutional rules and incite to debauchery in a public place,” state-media stated. The two had shared pictures and posts on their Facebook accounts which were subjects to media campaign against them eventually leading to their arrest.

Two other suspects are under interrogation. The incident under legal prosecution refers to the raise of a rainbow flag symbolic of the gay community during a concert last week by Lebanese band Mashrou Leila.

This comes as 15 defendants accused of committing acts of debauchery are to stand trial in front of a Misdemeanor Court.

But the number of arrested people is believed to have reached nearly 30 in a campaign against homosexuality which also included a decision by the local national Supreme Media Council to ban them from media representation.

Meanwhile, the Musicians Syndicate sought to ban the band form performing in Egypt and the band issued Monday a statement criticising the situation.
